OUR TREAT YO’ DINGO STORY

The Start

Our story stars me, Eliana Webster, I’m 12 now but was 11 when I started this journey. One day, mom and I were talking about classes us girls would like to take outside of the home like dance, music, gymnastics, cooking, swimming, etc. We also would like to buy new computers to use for some online classes. We talked about the way schools raise money for these things with yearly fundraisers. She told me about fundraisers she has done as a kid such as, selling wrapping paper for holidays, cookies, popcorn, fancy candy, and other edible goods, along with other small gifts like books, and stationary items.

FURRY FRIENDS INSPIRED US

We started a list of things we could do at home. We wanted it to be fun with the goal of learning something new. Also, it needed to be done in our home. Dog treats topped the list quickly as we LOVE dogs and making cookies. I have also wanted to buy a dog of my own for a while and thought this could help me get to that goal. I had a sneaky plan! My top three picks were a German Shepherd, a Husky, or an Australian Shepherd. Mom said that if I wanted a dog of my own, I would need to save my own money, read ALL about the three types of dogs so I can pick the personality for me, research trainings to use with her so she is obedient, and clean up after her all on my own. With a huge smile, I accepted the challenge! ACTUALLY, mom said, “We already have a Bernese Mountain dog, I don’t think I can handle another BIG dog as well as all of our other animals!” She was referring to our cat, chickens, bunnies, fish and all the neighborhood kids! Lol However, a close friend of hers, breeds Australian Shepherds on her farm in Darrington, WA. That’s only 3 hours from us. We talked to her, and she hooked us up with a dear friend that breeds on her farm also as she did not have any pups at the time. Also, we now have the potential to breed our Keke with our friends stud!

Our Why

SO, our journey started as a homeschool fundraiser/project in February of 2022. Valentine’s day was coming up and we thought it was a perfect opportunity to try out our idea. Mom and I have some experience in making dog food as we have had 2 dogs pass away from cancer in the past and have researched healthy alternatives to the normal store-bought dog food. We are of the mindset, ya are what ya eat. This has encouraged us to make sure that the ingredients we use are not only safe but beneficial to give life to our extended furry family members.

The BEGINNING PROCESS

We got to work right away with finding a few ingredients wanting the list to be small and minimally processed. Mom asked me to create a picture for the label because I love to draw, and it was a great opportunity to include art skills both by hand and with the computer. We came up with a name for the treats “Simply Treats” and used it for the first few batches we made. We used cookie cutters to make them extra cute for different holidays as well as custom stamping names. This met our goal of making the work fun as well as educational and well, not like work. After all I’m 12 and I don’t really want to “work” yet, but I’m learning from my mom, if you love your job, it does not feel like work at all.

FIRST BATCHES

After the first batches were made, we weighed them, packaged them up in cute Valentine bags with a note from us and set out to sell. Mom and I talked about who I would ask, what information I would share with them, the ingredients, the price and why we dehydrate them instead of baking them. Also, what the money will be used for. We took them to church Feb 13th with hopes to sell them all for Valentine’s Day. We were SO thankful as our friends and others were willing to support me and to treat their dogs they love so much. I was able to sell all the treats I had made! The best part was that all the dogs liked them, and serval of the customers asked for more or asked how to make them.

BUSINESS SCHOOL LOL

Mom and I talked about making more and she found a program online that teaches steps to start a dog treat business. We read through what the program offered and talked about the difference between reading about it and putting it into action as we learn about it. I love to homeschool because we can turn anything into a lesson and it’s not boring! That means it doesn’t feel like regular school sitting behind a desk or at a table with books. Most of the time my sister’s and I do our book work in forts we build all over the house, lol.

THE TREATS

Back to treats, we watched the videos together, took notes and talked about ideas of how we’d like the treat to look, where we would sell them, naming the business something catchy and fun, and my favorite part, buying treats like cotton candy and elephant ears at the events we would go to! No joke, I got one each time! Lol

Once we decided to turn this adventure into an all-encompassing entrepreneur lesson, as mom calls it, we needed to decide on an official name. We had so many fun and silly ideas, we needed to use the word “YO” in it because my mom uses that word all the time. When I say all the time, I mean ALL the time! We wanted it to rhyme and make you smile when you say it. Treat Yo’ Dingo was born, and we have loved watching our customers laugh as they say it!

OUR RECIPES

We have 6 recipes that we love to make and cut into a few signature shapes along with all sorts of holiday shapes. I know the dogs don’t care about the shape but its fun and entertaining to us while making them and sentimental for the owners purchasing them. At this point, we have made thousands of treats and have attended 20+ events and still love it. I would like to add cat treats as people often ask if we have them and yes, we love our cat just as much. I would most definitely like to add dog walking and dog sitting in the future as well. Mom would like to add bandanas for both cats and dogs as, believe it or not many people ask for cat bandanas.
